It is 7am and I slept for 2 hours last night in anticipation of what the day will bring and what it’s events will bring to the next era of my life. I started playing guitar when I was 8, started playing in bands when I was 13 and started Bayside when I was 18. A lot of people ask when we knew that we “made it” and I usually don’t have an answer because I have always been a believer that truly “making it” doesn’t afford you the time to notice that you have. I have kept my head down and stayed prepared for what was going to come next and never gave myself the opportunity to appreciate what was happening at the time. But today, in the 10th year of our band, after 8 releases, 4 continents, 1000s of shows and a million memories, I am sitting in my house, enjoying a cup of coffee and thinking about the ride I have been on. I wondered in a lyric a few years ago if any of it was worth it and today, having finally given myself the opportunity to think about it, I can assure myself that it has been. I love being in Bayside, I love making music, I love our fans and I can’t wait for the next 10 years. Today is going to be a big day

Moderation Is Not a Negation of Intensity, But Helps Avoid Monotony

Will you stop for a while, stop trying to pull yourself together
for some clear “meaning” - some momentary summary?
No on can have poetry or dances, prayer or climaxes all day;
The ordinary blankness of little dramatic consciousness is good for the health sometimes,
only Dostoevsky can be Dostoevskian at such long tumultuous stretches;
Look what that intensity did to poor great Van Gogh!;
Linger, lunge, scrounge and be stupid,
that doesn’t take much centering of one’s forces;
As wise Whitman said “lounge and invite the soul”
Get enough sleep and not only because (as Cocteau said) “poetry is the literature of sleep”;
Be a dumbell for a few minutes at least;

there’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I poor whiskey on him and inhale cigarette smoke and the whores and the bartenders and the grocery clerks never know that he’s in there

there’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too tough for him. I say “stay down, do you want to mess me up? do you want to screw up my works? you want to blow my book sales in Europe?”

there’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too clever. I only let him out at night sometimes when everybody’s asleep. I say “I know that you’re there so don’t be sad”. Then I put him back but he’s singing a little in there. I haven’t quite let him die. And we sleep together like that, with our secret pact ,and it’s nice enough to make a man weep…but I don’t weep. I don’t like the attention that it gets and sometimes I think it is taking focus off of the music I make. One of the hardest things for me to hear is that people have liked the band but my attitude turns them away. I can’t lose sight of why i got into all this in the first place. I know it probably has seemed like a great way to get attention but I don’t see it that way. It’s a distraction. I’ve never been into the famous side of being in a band and as hard as it is to believe, I actually don’t like attention. I’m going back into my cave to make the best record of my life and you’ll hear from me when it’s done.

Sometimes I feel like writing anything in this blog is pointless because everyone will turn whatever...

Sometimes I feel like writing anything in this blog is pointless because everyone will turn whatever i say into whatever they want it to mean. Short of having a full conversation with everyone in the world, it’s impossible to get the real point across to most people

If kids on message boards are entitled to opinions I’m entitled to mine. I totally welcome rants and nasty opinions. I have plenty myself

I wasn’t defending a t shirt design, I could care less if people like a t shirt design. I defend myself when people call me a ripoff

Not only do I think everyone should like our band, I think it’s crazy anyone does

I’m not professional or PC and never claimed to be. I’m an opinionated music fan with a dirty mouth like most other music fans. I just have a platform for my of color opinions whether they’re favorable or not

I like Brand New. I used to do merch for Brand New when Bayside was first starting

I especially enjoyed “PlacesToGo“‘s insight. I like the Ruff Ryder’s avatar. you’re so clever and ironic. if it’s not there for irony, and you actually like ruff ryders, then you’re just as retarded.

Mr “SSLYBY”, I’m sure that you used to like us but went off to college and only listen to Brand New and the Beatles now. Can’t be bothered with our pop punk shenanigans. Not sure if it’s cool that you like Kings of Leon yet though. I’ll have to check with scene police and see if they get a pass. They did play Lollapalooza so you’re probably ok.

Kopi Luwak or Civet Coffee has to be one of the strangest...

Kopi Luwak or Civet Coffee has to be one of the strangest delicacies that I have ever heard of. It’s some Indiana Jones type shit. I will give you the Wiki definition because it’s more tasteful and scientific then I would be able to say it

Kopi Luak (pronounced [ˈkopi ˈloo - uck]) or Civet coffee is coffee made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) and other related civets. The civets eat the berries, but the beans inside pass through their system undigested.

So this ugly looking thing eats coffee, craps it out, Indonesian people pick the beans out of the droppings and then brew them. The craziest part is that the beans go for anywhere from $100-$600 a pound! It’s known as the most expensive coffee there is. Wiki says there are cafes that serve it for $50 a cup.

i think I would actually try it though. Next time I’m in London, I’m all over it. Who’s with me?

The Anthony Raneri / Atticus Shirt is available at Zumiez!!

Hey guys. I don’t like just popping up and saying this band sucks or this band is great. i try my best to wrap my head around things and analyze them before I talk about them.

Now there are bands that are bad for sure and bands that are great. The most disappointing thing that I am seeing these days is just completely fake bands. And I don’t mean fake in intentions and attitudes. I remember when that was the problem with the scene and I wish that was all it was. Things have gotten a lot worse then I could have imagined. The amount of “bands” that I see using autotune live, playing to drum tracks with a drummer pretending to play along, people even straight up lip syncing. It’s outrageous. Bands that use professional songwriters and bands that use sex appeal to win over 13 year old girls. It’s just awful. It almost makes me wish for bands that are writing and playing music just to get rich because that would be better then bands that are having other people write it for them and then pretending to play it live.

what really breaks my heart and gives me the feeling that this black cloud disguised in neon is going to continue to digest our scene until there’s nothing left of it is that no one seems to give a shit. The bands that are using auto tune when they play, don’t turn it off in between songs so they sound like auto tuned robots when they talk. It’s such an insult to people’s intelligence and these bands don’t even have to hide it because everyone is eating it up anyway. They need to take that shit over to radio disney.

To be honest I saw Brokencyde and Millionaires and after seeing a lot of other bands, I wasn’t even that offended by them. I mean, I don’t like it still, but at least they are exactly what they claim to be. They’re not pretending to be bands. They’re not trying to trick anyone into thinking that they’re musicians. And at least they write their own fucking songs.

I guess what I’m saying is, there are silent killers out there that are poisoning us from the inside, and they’re flying under our radars because they’re holding instruments and pretending to play them while we’re all bitching about the fucking Millionaires.

-“so why don’t we start making a history worth being proud of and start fighting the real fucking enemy?” -propagandhi

Here’s my first solo song. Good friends and good fun.

This blog is overdue but it’s been a crazy 5 months and I finally have some time now to sit down with a cup of coffee and put my feelings down.

We have just finished up a tour with a band called New Found Glory. The tour basically started in January and ended in June. It’s been 5 months, 10 countries, 52 cities and over 1/2 a million fans. When i say that this tour was a dream come true, I mean it on a bunch of levels. For one, NFG was a band that i grew up listening to and had a lot to do with the shaping of our band. As a matter of fact, when we recorded our first demo in 2000, we were driving to see NFG play in Long Island at a catering hall the day we recorded it. We wanted to give them a copy of the cd but it we didn’t have a name to write on it, so on the way to the show we passed by the BAYSIDE train station and said, that’s it, it’s just gonna be Bayside so that we can write something on the cd for them. other then that, when we started our band “Nothing Gold Can Stay” had just come out and it was on heavy rotation on all of our first tours and now, “Not Without a Fight” is in heavy rotation on our current tours.

NFG is a classy band, and you don’t get that enough with bands anymore. They truly care about music, about originality, about their fans, about their friends and they care about the scene and what is going to become of it. Being on tour with them was the perfect mix of being with peers and goofing off and kind of like being with statesmen who showed us how much more there is to learn about being a band. Being a band is more then just playing some songs and NFG is the whole package. From seeing them when I was 16 to seeing them everyday for 5 months all over the world, my jaw drops everytime.

We want to thank those guys so much for everything they have done for us and for being great friends that we’l have for the rest of our lives.

Oh lady gaga, you’re so abstract and artsy. fucking hack....

Oh lady gaga, you’re so abstract and artsy. fucking hack. you gotta wait till the end and see her play with her feet. laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame
